“Imma let you finish” – Kanye West Interrupts

The phrase “Imma let you finish” has it´s background
from the MTV Music Awards in 2009 when Taylor Swift received an award for the
Best Female Video. When Taylor Swift was on stage to receive the prize, holding
her acceptance speech the rapper Kanye West suddenly came on stage, took her
microphone and claimed that Beyonce had the best music video of all times. One
part of the interruption was the words “Imma let you finish”. This phrase
became frequently used in memes and macros after this evening.
After the MTV Music Awards the a lot of videos became uploaded on the Internet, containing Kanye West interruption on stage cut out of the real action and cut into other videos. One example is that Kanye interrupts Barrack Obama in a speech, another one he interrupts George Bush and in one he interrupts “The Return of The King”. The video with Obama had 4,7 million hits in 2012.

A lot of images with the phrase became posted on 4chan and also on a Twitter – account was created in the name “KanyeInterrupts”. In just a few days the macro images was all over the Internet. Between the 15th and 18th of September, just a couple of days after the MTV Music Awards load of images and videos was posted and the popularity was increasing.
In between the time span of seven days (13th – 19th of September 2009) the search volume on Google was 100. The reason these memes and macros became so popular must be the fact that Kanye West did a pretty huge deal out of himself on stage, and that he was acting in a way that affected both Taylor Swift and Beyonce. The way he was acting and talking was pretty direct and surprising for the audience. Since the MTV Music Awards was direct on-air, it didn´t take long before it was shared many different places on the Internet.

A meme that may have emerged from this will probably
be the memes that presents Kanye West as a douche bag after doing his “stunt”
at the Award, or the image macros based on the apology that West made to Taylor
Swift on his Twitter account after the show.
